The Cooperative Research Centre
for Welded Structures

The Cooperative Research Centre (CRC) for Welded Structures has been formed from an Australian Government initiative aimed at bringing industry and research providers together so that Research and Development in welding and related technologies can produce useable outcomes to benefit industry and the national economy.

It started operation in 1992 as the CRC for Welding and Joining, with six Core Partners. In April 1999 it was announced that the CRC for Welded Structures application for funding in the CRC Program 1998 Selection Round was successful. The CRC for Welded Structures, one of 26 CRCs to be successful, was granted $11.5m for its operations over the next seven years (1999 - 2006).

The new CRC expanded and built upon the success of the participants in the CRC for Welded Structures, with the new Core Partners being:

  • Agility Team Build Pty Ltd

  • Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation (ANSTO)

  • Australian Pipeline Industry Association (APIA)

  • Bluescope Steel

  • Centre of Oil & Gas Engineering, University of Western Australia

  • CIGWELD

  • CSIRO Division of Manufacturing Technology

  • Defence Science and Technology Organisation (DSTO)

  • OneSteel Ltd
  • Connel Wagner PPI

  • University of Adelaide

  • University of Sydney

  • University of Wollongong

  • Welding Technology Institute of Australia (WTIA)

  • Woodside Energy

   The ways the CRC aims to help industry are by:

  • Providing a focused and comprehensive resource to carry out research in welding and joining;

  • Devising means and methods to improve productivity and performance;

  • Developing novel areas of the technology;

  • Providing highly capable and knowledgeable engineers for industry with postgraduate qualifications

  • Providing information from its knowledge base in its area of expertise; and,

  • Transferring technology by direct interaction with industry.

The CRC has active programs in Research, Education and Technology Transfer focused on the enhancement and profitability of Australian industry.
