| Chris
Smallbone A key objective of his 35-year career has been the improvement of the global quality of life through the optimum use of welding and joining technology. He has been involved since 1978 with the 48-member country International Institute of Welding (IIW) as a Board member, Vice President and Director. The IIW, headquartered in Paris, was founded in 1948 and is the global body in the science and industrial application of joining technology. Chris Smallbone was recently inducted as the 20th President of the IIW for the period July 2005 to September 2008. This appointment is only the second time that a representative from a Southern Hemisphere member country has been appointed to this prestigious position in the 56-year history of the IIW. It is a significant achievement for Australia and Australian industry. Chris has given 30 years service to IIW and the welding industry world-wide. In 1992 he chaired the working group that established the new IIW Education, Training and Qualification programmes for welding personnel on an international basis, now adopted in 32 countries. Since 1993, he was the IIW Director with the responsibility for developing and implementing the very successful IIW key strategy on Regional Activities and Liaison with Developing Countries, as well as the Chairman of the Board of Directors’ Task Force on Certification. Since 1978 he has received twelve major awards for his work, from the American Welding Society (AWS), SAIW and the WTIA. He is also a Fellow of the Institution of Engineers (Aust), Institution of Mechanical Engineers (UK), The Welding Institute (UK), the SAIW and WTIA, as well as a Professional Chartered Engineer in Australia and the UK. From April 1995 he has led the very successful
team effort building up the WTIA to its present level of national
and international credibility. At the WTIA, he has been involved in
a series of national projects on Technology Diffusion and Innovation
supported by the Australian, State and Territory Governments and industry
throughout the country. Through the IIW he has undertaken a number
of similar initiatives in South Eastern Europe and Southern Africa
and is introducing a global cooperative project to approach the challenge
of skills shortages and the improvement of the image of welding throughout
the world.

Gross Ben was previously Manager Technical
Panels with the Institute, leaving 5 years ago to work on major pipeline
projects in Canada and the US. He is a qualified Metallurgist and
Welding Engineer from the UK, with experience in pipeline welding,
NDT, ECA, corrosion prevention, asset management and pipeline construction.
In his role as Research and Technology Manager, Ben works with the
NDNP team to ensure industry’s best possible access to appropriate
technologies and forming the vital link between industry, technology
and research. This is accomplished through liaison with State Technology
Managers, SMART Groups, WTIA research “Centres of Excellence”
network organisations such as CSIRO and the CRC for Welded Structures,
as well as members of the the OzWeld Technology Support Centres Network. |

| Paul commenced his career as an apprentice boilermaker and progressed on to become a tradesman boilermaker, qualified welder and welding supervisor in the off-shore construction, petro-chemical, general fabrication and the mining industries. He was one of the early graduates from the Masters degree at the University of Wollongong. His background, and his experience teaching in TAFE make him well suited to the task of promoting "technology receptors" in our industries. As Coordinator of our SMART Pipelines Program he calls on his 10 years experience as welding engineer for AGL and his involvement with Australian Standards sub-committees, AGA, WTIA/APIA Technical Panel 7 - Pipelines and CRC Project Management Committee for pipelines research. | |

| From 1975 to 1980 Glen was employed by Tubemakers as a trainee where he completed a Metallurgy Certificate and Non-Destructive Testing Post Certificate. While working as a non-destructive testing technician with CW Pope and Associates in the early '80's, Glen developed an interest in the science of welding and in 1984 completed a Welding Technology Certificate at Tighes Hill TAFE. At the same time he completed a "Pressure Welding Ticket" (AS1796 Certificate 3E) and a Welding Supervisors Ticket (AS1796 Certificate 10). Glen furthered his qualifications in welding when the Master of Engineering Practice in Materials Welding and Joining was offered at the University of Wollongong in 1994. Glen graduated with a Master of Engineering Practice in Materials Welding and Joining in1998 after completing the course in 1997. |
